Before arriving to Oaxaca, I had known for a long time that I wanted to spend a year abroad before beginning college, and an alliance between SiKanda and a German foreign exchange program gave me the opportunity to do so.  It turned out to be an incredible opportunity for me, with experiences and people that I will never forget.

I am very thankful that SiKanda was able to receive me so openly and patiently, and that they were able to help me get to know the wonderful state of Oaxaca.  I had the opportunity to work on various projects, but I dedicated a large part of my time to school workshops, the gardens, and fertilizer production.  I never thought I would learn so much about worms!  It was really fun showing the boys and girls how to tend to worms in order to make organic fertilizer.

My favorite memory, however, was that of building of “Green Libraries.”  Before seeing the libraries I wouldn’t have believed that “transforming trash into hope” could be taken literally in this project.  It was amazing to watch the students and their parents participate in the construction, but the most memorable moment for me was when we gave books to Zaachila Technical High School #223.  The students gazed over all the novels and nonfiction books that we had collected; their eyes began to shine as they immersed themselves in the distant landscapes the books delivered them to.  Most of them were around fifteen years old and in their last year of high school, but they had almost never had access to so many books before.  The library represented a prospect of inspiration for them, and provided them with pathways to a better future…
